Sleep is vital for keeping your elderly family member healthy and happy, but it’s difficult to get sometimes. These adjustments can help your senior to get better sleep more consistently.
Get an Exercise Program Going
Exercise does so much good for your senior’s body and her mind. One of the benefits that she might not anticipate is that she might find it easier to get to sleep at night. Her sleep might also be a much higher quality than it has been in the past. Make sure that you talk to her doctor before she starts any exercise program, though. It’s vital to make sure that she’s healthy enough to exercise.
Watch What She’s Eating
If your elderly family member isn’t sleeping well, what she’s eating may have at least a little bit to do with that. Caffeine is the obvious culprit in most cases, but there could be other contributing factors, too. Everyone’s internal chemistry is different and some people might find some foods to be more hazardous to their sleep later in the day. Keeping a food diary can help to track this.
When She Eats Is Important, Too
Just as important as what your senior eats is when she’s eating. If she’s eating meals within a couple hours of bedtime, digestion could be interfering with her ability to get fully to sleep. Part of planning meals for your elderly family member needs to involve not just what to include, but when they’re spaced throughout the day for the best impact on her day and her energy levels.
Socialization and the Outside World Make a Difference
If your elderly family member is battling loneliness, that’s going to affect every area of her life, especially her ability to sleep and to rest. She may also need to get outside more often, which can be difficult if her mobility is limited. Hiring elder care providers can help to solve many of these issues. They’re great companions and they can be a stabilizing force when your senior isn’t sure of her environment.
There is so much that goes into a good night of sleep for your senior. It might help to start keeping a sleep journal so that you can track as many variables as possible. If you go that route, try recording shorter periods of time, say a week or so, to avoid becoming bogged down in too many details.
