How Alcohol Can Affect Mental Health

Your older family member’s mental health is an important aspect of their overall well-being. Many seniors suffer from anxiety, depression, or other mental health conditions. If your aging relative has a mental health condition and has a habit of drinking a glass of wine or a beer each day, a new study suggests that giving up the alcohol could improve their mental health.

Alcohol and Mental Health Study

In a study that involved more than 40,000 participants from China and the United States, scientists found that there is a correlation between drinking a moderate amount of alcohol and mental health. Moderate drinking was defined as 7 or fewer drinks each week. Anyone that indicated they drank heavily was excluded from the study because it has already been established that excessive drinking has a negative impact. Participants were followed for 4 years.

The results of the study showed that those who did not drink alcohol had better mental health than did those who drank at the outset of the research. The people who drank moderately and gave it up during the study had the greatest improvement in mental health. In fact, at the end of the study, they had a better outcome than did the participants who never drank at all.

Other Ways to Improve Mental Health

Giving up alcohol isn’t the only way to improve mental health. There are several ways to boost your aging relative’s mood and their overall well-being, such as the suggestions below:

  • Practice Positivity: When people think negative thoughts about themselves or their lives, it brings down their mood. Encourage your older family member to look for the positive aspects of their life. When they speak negatively, try to turn the conversation toward happier subjects.
  • Stay Connected: There’s all kinds of research that suggests a lack of social connection is bad for mental health. Help your aging relative to spend time with their friends and family and to get out of the house more.
  • Eat Well and Exercise: Taking care of physical health can boost mental health as well. Older adults need to eat healthy, balanced meals and stay physically active.
