Do You Try to Ignore What You're Feeling?
As a caregiver it’s not always easy to give into what you’re feeling. You might worry that your feelings are wrong or bad, which makes it difficult to do what you need to do in order to manage those feelings in a healthy way.
Face Your Feelings Head On
It’s tempting to try to dodge your feelings. Feelings aren’t pretty and tidy usually, so they’re difficult to deal with sometimes. But if you’re ignoring them, they’re only going to get bigger. This is double true if those feelings are on the negative side of the equation. You’re going to find those feelings popping up when you least need or want them to pop up.
Find Someone to Talk To
You can try to tough it out on your own, but that’s not going to help. You’re going to want to find someone you can trust with whom you can talk and share what you’re feeling. It’s important that you reach out when you need that extra help. Joining a support group can help a lot because other caregivers know exactly what it’s like to be a caregiver and to feel the way that you feel.
You Feel How You Feel
If you’re of the mindset that you’ll be able to bully yourself out of how you’re feeling, you might find that to be more difficult than you expect. You feel how you feel. What you can control is how you react to those feelings and what you do in response to them. If you lash out in anger, that’s a bad situation. But if you take that anger and use it to change a situation that isn’t working well for you, you’ve done something positive.
Give Yourself an Outlet for Your Feelings
Everybody needs an outlet for how they’re feeling. You might find that strenuous exercise helps. Crying is also powerful for some people. Writing in a journal, talking to a friend, or going somewhere you enjoy can all help, too. Figure out what works best for you when you’re experiencing powerful emotions and make sure that you engage in those outlets when you need them.
No matter what you’re feeling, remember that you’re human. Being a caregiver is not an easy task and it requires a lot of you while you’re helping your aging adult. Give yourself plenty of grace and allow yourself to be the person that you are. You’ll be better for it.
