Four Things to Do to Hit the Next Level as a Caregiver
There’s a lot to consider when you start to think about “leveling up” as a caregiver. The types of experiences that take you to the next level involve giving you the experience and the tools that you need in order to tackle everything that comes up in your caregiving journey.
Prioritize You
If you’re not your top priority, you’re going to run into trouble as a caregiver. That sounds backward, but it’s true. You have to prioritize your own care and well-being so that you can focus afterward on what your elderly family member needs from you. You’re going to be able to do that better when you’re operating from a position of health and well-being.
Cultivate Other Interests
When you’re focused solely on being a caregiver, that denies the whole rest of who you are and what you love. You’re not just a caregiver. You do other things and you have other interests. When you allow yourself to focus on and to enjoy those other interests, you’re allowing yourself to be a more complete human being, which is vital to caring for someone else.
Get Hands-on Help
You don’t have to handle everything yourself. In fact, it’s much better for you and for your elderly family member if you’re not trying to do everything by yourself. When you’ve got hands-on help that you can trust and rely on, that gives you a chance to take a breath and a mental break. You know your elderly family member is in good hands and you can focus on the big picture.
Make Sure You Have Emotional Support
But it’s not just about hands-on help. You also need to have emotional support as a caregiver. You are going to experience a wide range of emotions and frustrations. Having someone that you can talk to about those feelings is vital because it allows you to work through those situations. Everybody has different needs in this regard. You might be able to rely on a friend or you may want a support group made up of other caregivers. You can also mix and match.
Hitting the next level as a caregiver isn’t about winning any prizes. It’s about being able to handle whatever comes your way next so that you can do the things your senior needs done. There are always going to be challenges and new needs that have to be addressed. When you’re able to do so without breaking stride, that’s beneficial.
