Four Ways to Set Boundaries With Your Parents
Being a primary family caregiver for your parent is your role, but it doesn’t have to overwhelm you. Here are some of the best ways to set boundaries that make everyone happy. Your parents still have your help, but you’re not feeling stressed and overwhelmed with the things you’re trying to balance.
Create Spaces Where You Can Have Time Alone
If you live with your parents, it’s essential to create a space to go when you need to be alone. Suppose you’ve just cooked dinner, done all of the dishes, cleaned up after you’ve eaten, and your dad is immediately asking you to make him his favorite dessert.
It would be best if you had a break, but that’s hard to do when he’s right on your heels. With a quiet place to escape to, you can take a few minutes to de-stress. A den with a locking door is one possibility. You could add a comfortable chair to your bedroom and curl up for a few minutes in there.
Make sure your parents also have a place to go to if they feel they need a break. Everyone should have a place to go to be alone for a few minutes. That helps eliminate angry outbursts that can lead to hurt feelings.
Learn to Say No
Be sure you say no. If you’re being asked to do something you don’t have time for, it’s okay to refuse. For example, your brother wants you to pick up his kids from school since you have to take your dad to his eye exam anyway.
If you can fit in one extra chore, it’s okay to agree if you want to. But, it’s also okay to know your limits and refuse to help out when it’s too much.
Ask Family Members to Step In
If you’re doing everything on your own, it’s time to speak up and ask others to help out. You have to go to your dental appointment. The last time you did that and left your mom in the waiting room, she wandered off.
Instead of canceling the appointment, ask your other family members to chip in. While you’re at the appointment, your sister could spend time with your dad.
Hire Companion Care at Home to Help

Companion care at home offers more than just companionship. Some of the services provided include medication reminders, meal preparation, transportation, ambulatory assistance and more.
